Shut the Box is a dice game of for one or more players, usually played by two, three, or four players. Historically, Shut the Box was often played as a gambling game in olde world pubs, where each player put an equal amount into the pot (or pool) and the winner took all. However, gambling isn't necessary to enjoy the game, and indeed, Shut the Box is a popular game for teaching children their numbers. The game uses a box with hinged tiles numbered 1 to 9 (or sometimes 1-10 or 1-12). The box is used as both game board and scoring device, and also serves as a container for easy and convenient storage. The game has a green felt playing surface.
