Got this for my daughter who has been going to an after school chess class. Its a beautiful set though the knights are a bit simplistic. We had the 15" but the proper board set up (white on right) required the drawers to be on the sides. No big deal. But the pieces are a bit too big for the 15" board. On the 17' they look great, The board set up is also correct on the 17"

ps Drawers work fine but on both boards the silicone drying bags broke open in transit, again just a slight inconvenience

I ordered the 21" set and it was ridiculously full of major flaws: dents, dings, scratches, individual chess pieces don't sit flat on the board, top of the board itself (which is just plywood) was not cut straight so one corner of board isn't fully 'set' into the surrounding cabinet, etc. This was a gift for my wife so I was very ticked at the awful quality of this product.[...], suffice it to say that while I'll never buy another Monarch chess set again, I would absolutely be willing to do business with Hayneedle in the future.

it was a very nice set, but the drawers didnt line up with curves on the side of the board...other than that it is very nice.

I received the set next day as expected. the board was rotated 90 degrees and the margin had some defects. I contacted customer service online and they solved the problem immediately. I would recommend the web site, but I think they may need to inspect the merchandise before shipping

Santa clearly scored a checkmate with this chess set as the receiver was totally aghast that Santa was so hip and knew his p's and q's in "making" this perfect gift. The quality is very good as well as it's stately appearance. the hide away, felt-lined storage drawers are a bonus and the pieces are sturdy, well anchored with felt covered bases. Thanks for a totally awesome Christmas gift that is superior in style and quality. Chess instructions would have been a bonus, but we'll find some somewhere.

I am generally happy with the chess set. The drawers on each side are nice. The wood is nice. The only cons are that some of the felt on the bottom of the chess pieces are not cut quite right so some of the pieces don't slide as easily as others. There is one rough spot on the top of the board- not quite sure why. When comparing with other sets, this is a good purchase for the money.

Q1: Do the size of the pieces vary with the board size? What are the dimensions of the squares on each of the boards?
A: The chess pieces will remain the same no matter what size board you get, so the king piece on all boards is 3.5 inches tall. The square dimensions for the 21 inch board are 2.2 x 2.2 inches. The square dimensions for the 17 inch board is 1.65 x 1.65 inches. The square dimensions for the 15 inch board is 1.45 x 1.45 inches.
