Large enough for stationary play when open, the foldable set is made of attractive maple with inlaid walnut, and makes quite a handsome traveling companion. Weighted pieces stay in place when the road gets bumpy, while a 12 x 12-inch open surface with 1.25 inch squares gives you enough room to play under any traveling conditions. When folded, it takes up no more room than a book. The pieces are stored neatly in lined slots when folded. Traveling doesn't get much better than that.     This is a nice chess set for travel or home use. I personally bought it because I wanted a smaller, portable set to carry places. The magnetized board and pieces are what made the price acceptable. I didn't care for the thin plastic moldings to hold the pieces. They didn't hold them well and one didn't want to stay in the box. I threw the molds away and glued red felt inside both compartments. The pieces are loose, inside but now it looks like a $40. set.

    The chess set is functional though not as nice as it looks in the picture. The board is not glossy as you see in the photo and the pieces are stored in a platform that is not stable and shifts frequently. Even if you place the chess pieces in their designated location, the pieces fall all over the place as you try to fold the board for storage.

          I purchased this product for its small size and the fact that it was magnetic. I love everything about it actually except for the fact that I fear scratching up such a lovely set in my travels. I keep it in the cardboard box to protect it. The piece holder inside the board is useless as the pieces cannot be easily added or taken out of the set without mishap. I just removed the piece holders and put the pieces inside without them. The pieces are in zip-lock bags.[...] I will purchase other chess products from this company.
