A journey of 24 points begins with a single set up A backgammon set up is deceptively simple, and studying its arrangement is a good way for a beginner to learn about backgammon opening theory. Here's how to get started on the path to becoming a backgammon master. Quadrants and Halves A backgammon board is divided into four quadrants, each with six points of alternating color. It's also divided into two halves separated by a bar: an inner board or home board, and an outer board. The points are numbered from one to 24 relative to each player, i.e. player A's one is player B's 24. A player's inner or home board may be on either the left or the right side, depending on which color is being played. The home boards should be positioned opposite one another so that one player moves clockwise and the other player moves counterclockwise. Checker Distribution Backgammon sets contain 30 checkers (15 of each color, usually white and black) which are divided equally between the two players. Each player places five checkers on his/her point six, i.e. the point at which an unobstructed checker would need to move six points to clear the board. Another three checkers are placed on point eight, two points behind the first group of five checkers. Five more checkers are placed on point 13, which is the last point on the other side of the board. Finally, two checkers are placed on point 24, or the first point on the opposite side. | ![]() |
Preferred Openings
To hone your backgammon skills, try setting up your backgammon set and thumbing through a book about backgammon opening strategies. Consider each potential opening roll and its offensive or defensive possibilities. For example, an opening roll of 2/1 could be used to move a checker from point 13 to point 11 and another from point six to point five, or from 13 to 11 and 24 to 23. As you'll quickly see, the possibilities are virtually endless. That's one of the reasons why backgammon remains a fun and mentally stimulating game - even for those who've played it for years.
